Celestial Globe Vase

Inspired by antique Celestial maps and globes, the culmination of Dom’s Zodiac series!
A slightly wobbly, less than perfectly spherical hand built globe. We think that adds to it’s antiquey charm, along with the cracks inside that don’t go all the way through (it is watertight!)
The show-stopping element of this vase is the intricate decoration, all the signs of the Zodiac are thoughtfully depicted along with some more niche constellations….
~~~
Constellations other than star signs depicted on the vase are...
~ Cygnus the swan
~ Lepus the Hare
~ Triangulum (the triangle?)
~ Crater, depicted by an ancient greek chalice used to water down wine
~ Cor Coroli, a one star constellation invented by King Charles II's physician, depicting King Charles I's heart (not a monarchist, just love heart motifs)
~ Felis, made up in the late 18th century, by a cat loving French Astronomer, sadly no longer in use.
~ Sculptor, originally named 'Apparatus Sculptoris' or the sculptors studio
~ Musca the fly
~ Columba the dove
~ Harpa Georgii, part of another vanity constellation, this time for King George III (I just loved the imagery of the lady/harp)
~ Apus, bird of paradise (the Greeks incorrectly believed they had no feet!
Coil built in stoneware.
